Description

**THIS IS NOT MY POT** I'm posting it for a friend.

"It's an ikebana vase. Ikebana is a Japanese floral art form unique to flower arrangement as bonsai is to potted plants. The thing in the middle is called a kenzan which is used to hold the flowers upright."

Dwight

This is a crytalline glaze pot
"Glazes which contain crystals within the amorphous(glassy) matrix of the glaze. The glaze itself is not entirely composed of crystals. Crystals give opacity, matt surface and visual effects. The crystals grow mostly during cooling by isolation of the essential oxides from the surrounding fluid glaze. The process is known as devitrification and is given encouragement by seeding and by controlling the rate of cooling"

-page 99 in the "Crystalline glazes" section in the "The Potter's Dictionary of materials and techniques, 5th edition" by Frank and Janet Hamer.

I'm posting this because this potter is a good friend and mentor of mine, not mention boss. Dwight and I both work at Karen Donleavy Designs Inc. in Caldwell, ID(a local production pottery of thrown porcelain) [link]

Dwight's been on the pottery scene for 33 years now, he's used everything from terra cotta to porcelain and fired everything from raku to now the superior crystalline glaze. He's also been featured in a few museums in the Bay Area of San Francisco, CA. He's self-taught in both throwing and glazing, including crystal glaze-which is literally the hardest thing in pottery. So please go visit him on the Crystalline Glaze Forum [link]

Also if you'd like to see him throw visit this YouTube link [link]
